Basketball Betting Lines

02/15/2012 - Milwaukee, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Marco Belinelli led the Hornets with 22 points as New Orleans snapped a six-game road losing streak, defeating the Milwaukee Bucks 92-89 at Bradley Center on Wednesday.

Chris Kaman added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Trevor Ariza netted 14 points for the Hornets, who have now won 11 of their last 12 meetings with the Bucks.

Milwaukee had five scorers in double figures including 23 points from Ersan Ilyasova. Brandon Jennings chipped in 18 points for the Bucks as they dropped their fifth straight game at Bradley Center.

The Hornets would extend their lead as high as 13 after a Kaman jumper made it 70-57, but the Bucks closed out the third on an 8-2 run, as they trailed 72-65 heading into the fourth quarter.

Milwaukee stayed hot in the fourth as it opened up with back-to-back three- pointers from Jennings and then Mike Dunleavy to pull within one, 72-71, early in the fourth.

The combination of Jennings and Dunleavy again came through late in the quarter when they hit back-to-back threes around a Gustavo Ayon layup to cut the deficit to 89-87 with 1:15 to go.

The Hornets came up empty on their next trip, but the Bucks turned the ball over on the next two possessions. New Orleans then proceeded to hit 3-of-4 from the line to escape Milwaukee with a victory.

Drew Gooden led all scorers with nine points in a back-and-forth first quarter that saw the Bucks take the early 28-27 advantage.

The Hornets got five points in the final 30.9 seconds of the second as Ariza buried a triple and Donald Sloan converted on a layup to give New Orleans a 50-45 lead at halftime.

What Is the Point Spread?

What are Sports Betting Point Spreads?

In any football or basketball game (the main sports that use point spreads) there are two teams playing against each other.

Those teams, though, are rarely exactly evenly matched – meaning that typically one team has a better chance than the other to win the game. If bettors were allowed to bet on who was simply going to win the game, smart ones would obviously bet on the better team (likely winning more than 50% of the time in the process).

If winning were that easy the Las Vegas and online sportsbooks would stop taking any bets! This is where the point spread comes in: the basic function of the point spread is to balance the likelihood of each team “winning” by adjusting the final score by the point spread. After this adjustment is made you get the Against The Spread result (ATS result for short).

Let’s look at Super Bowl XXXIX, New England Patriots vs. Philadelphia Eagles. Most people believed the defending champ Patriots to be the better team – so if betting were simply based upon which team would win the game, an uneven majority of people would have wagered on New England. But, by using the point spread, the bookmakers adjusted the terms of the bet, evening the proposition so about half the people believed the Pats to be the smart bet, while the other half considered Philly to be the smart bet.

How to Read Point Spreads

New England Patriots -7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

The better team, called the Favorite, is expected to win the game and must “give” or “lay” points to the weaker team. The favorite is listed with a minus sign and the number of points they are favored by (e.g., New England -7)

In the case of our example, New England must not only win the game, but they must win by more than 7 points for Pats bettors to have a winning ATS result. An Eagles bettor wins his bet either if:

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup

September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com.  The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.

Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to  name a  few.  Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR.  They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.

The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer.  Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
