11/09/2007 - Stuttgart, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Defending champion Stuttgart has started to regain some of its championship form, but will be put to a big test when it hosts unbeaten Bayern Munich in one of three big Bundesliga matches Saturday.
Stuttgart, which sits a disappointing 11th through 12 matches, has won two in a row to show some life after a terrible start. But while victories over Bayer Leverkusen and Nurnberg have sparked hopes of a resurgence, a poor result this weekend will erase those thoughts.
In addition to the showdown in Stuttgart, second-place Hamburg hosts seventh- place Schalke with a chance to move into the top spot and third-place Werder Bremen hosts fourth-place Karlsruher.
Stuttgart and Bayern Munich are both coming off mid-week European games, with Stuttgart losing its fourth straight in the Champions League and Bayern being held to a surprising draw against Bolton in the UEFA Cup.
Stuttgart has two Champions League games remaining, but has no chance to make the knockout round after Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Lyon.
Although Stuttgart wasted a coveted spot in Europe's top club event, at least now the Bundesliga champions can completely focus on the league.
All Stuttgart (5-6-1) has to do to prove its going to be heard from again this season is run its winning streak to three matches Saturday.
"We're surely underdogs, but if all players go into the match having recovered well (from the Champions League), then we will field a team that is capable of beating Bayern," Stuttgart manager Armin Veh said.
Bayern led its UEFA Cup game thanks to two of goals from Lukas Podolski, but Bolton equalized in the final 10 minutes for a 2-2 tie. Although Bayern is in little danger of failing to advance in the event, the result was its third straight draw.
Bayern (8-0-4) also tied its last two games in the Bundesliga, 0-0 to Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht.
But unless Bayern is tired after Thursday's UEFA Cup match, expect the leaders to be up to the challenge. Two of Bayern's biggest wins in the Bundesliga this season were against Werder Bremen (4-0) and Karlsruher (4-1).
"We have a big squad and a good one," Bayern's Philipp Lahm said, "which is of great advantage in such situations."
Hamburg (8-2-2), which is unbeaten in seven straight, visits Schalke with its eyes on the top spot. If Stuttgart can beat Bayern, Hamburg can move into the lead with a victory.
Schalke (4-2-6) has been tough to defeat this season in the league and played well in a 0-0 draw with Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday.
"This is a big game for us," Hamburg sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer said. "We have to invest all our power and concentration and go to our limits to be successful."
Werder Bremen (7-2-3) also competed in the Champions League this week, falling 1-0 to Lazio. But Werder unbeaten in six of its last seven Bundesliga matches.
Newly-promoted Karlsruher (7-3-2) is unbeaten in six straight entering the key match at Werder's Weserstadion stadium.
On Friday, Daniel Imhof and Tommy Bechmann scored as Bochum defeated Duisburg, 2-0.
Also on Saturday, Rostock hosts Energie, Borussia Dortmund hosts Eintracht and Hertha Berlin hosts Hannover.
On Sunday, Wolfsburg hosts fifth-place Bayer Leverkusen and Arminia Bielefeld hosts Nurnberg.

It's less than a month until the NHL hockey betting season opens at MySportsbook.com and preparations are underway for another battle in the race to hoist Lord Stanley's mug in 2007.
As cup crazy fans prepare to place their bets, one online sportsbook ,MySportsbook.com, is offering hockey betting lines on the 2007/2007 Stanley Cup , who will bring it home this upcoming season.
Despite a poor showing in last season's playoffs and the loss of Steve Yzerman to retirement, the Detroit Red Wings are early favourites at this online sportsbook with wagering odds of 6-1. The Wings will look to offensive powerhouse Pavel Datsyuk and newly appointed captain Nicklas Lidstrom to lead one of the league's most prominent franchises.
Always a threat are the Ottawa Senators, with newly acquired goaltender Martin Gerber from the Stanley Cup champion ,Carolina Hurricanes. The Sens are second best in the rankings at a 7-1 bet, and odds makers at this sportsbook are optimistic that the Ottawa squad will fare better than last season's Eastern Conference semi-final upset to the Buffalo Sabres.
Also worth noting are the defending Stanley Cup champs Carolina Hurricanes, a 10-1 bet to repeat. Behind the Canes are the New Jersey Devils, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Philadelphia Flyers, and Anaheim Mighty Ducks all sit at 12-1. In the basement are the Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, and St. Louis Blues who all have 100-1 odds to win.

The San Francisco 49ers (5-11 SU, 5-10-1 ATS in 2007; 1-1 SU & ATS in pre-season) found some offensive life last week, and they will try to build some momentum on Thursday night as they travel to the Windy City to take on the Chicago Bears (7-9 SU & ATS in 2007; 0-2 SU, 0-1-1 ATS in pre-season) in an NFL matchup that is set to get underway at 8 PM ET at Soldier Field (natural turf) in Chicago.

NFL betting odds: CHICAGO -3 (-120), Total 37
NOTABLE STAT: San Francisco was last in points, last in total offense in 2007
KEY NFL BETTING TREND: SF has lost its last seven SU on pre-season road
In the BetUS NFL pre-season football betting odds, the Bears are listed as a three-point favorite (laying -120), with the total posted at 37 points.
Here are some NFL football betting trends as they relate to this matchup (reflecting numbers going into the 2008 season):
* SF has lost 11 of its last 14 games SU
* SF has covered three of its last 11 games
* SF has lost six of its last seven road games SU
* SF has covered one of its last seven road games
* CHI has covered five of its last eight games
* CHI has played five of its last seven games OVER the total
* CHI has covered four of its last 13 home games
* SF has lost its last seven pre-season road games SU
* CHI has covered two of its last seven home pre-season games
Well, I guess we should congratulate the Bears on making their quarterback choice for the season's opening game, as they have designated Kyle Orton the starter against Indianapolis. The Bears obviously have lost patience with Rex Grossman, and what they do with him at this point is anybody's guess. But suffice it to say that there isn't a quarterback competition anymore, at least in training camp.
Meanwhile, the quarterback competition may also be settled in San Francisco, where the Niners bounced back from a lackluster 18-6 loss to the Raiders, in which they turned the ball over four times, to execute a 34-6 rout of the Packers last Saturday. However, coach Mike Nolan has stopped short of saying that, insisting that the job is still open. But J.T. O'Sullivan, the longshot of the trio of Niner signal-callers who opened camp, will start his third straight pre-season game here. Against Green Bay, O'Sullivan was only 8-for-17, and was intercepted, but he also threw for 9.1 yards an attempt, which included a 59-yard TD pass to Josh Morgan. The others struggled.
Some offensive cohesion is badly needed, in light of the Niners' dismal 2007 campaign, in which they were dead last in the NFL in scoring, with just 13.7 points a game. And O'Sullivan is the guy who is most familiar with offensive coordinator Mike Martz's exacting system, because he learned it last year in Detroit. O'Sullivan will go at least the entire first half and may even last longer. He'll be relieved by Alex Smith, with Shawn Hill doing the mop-up work. Three receivers who were out last week - Bryant Johnson, Ashley Lelie and Arnaz Battle - will miss this game too.
That may hurt a little here, especially since the Bears will be using a lot of their defensive starters. And it's the defense that has been keeping the Bears in games thus far. In fact, the defense and special teams were responsible for the first 19 points Chicago scored against Seattle last time out, as the offense really struggled with Grossman at the controls. But maybe the first-team offense has a chance to settle a little bit as it works more with Orton at the helm.
Certainly we have concerns about the Bears' offensive line, but we like the scenario for them here, especially if O'Sullivan doesn't make some bis plays. The Niners may have nowhere else to turn right now, and they have lost seven straight road games in the pre-season. Let's take Chicago, the three-point favorite in the NFL football betting odds.
